It joins the long list of canceled gaming events in 2020

One of the most popular events for World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo fans, Blizzcon, has just been canceled. In a short blog post, Saralyn Smith, Executive Producer of Blizzcon, explains that after much consideration the company decided that it would be better to cancel the gaming event.

Usually scheduled to take place in November each year, Blizzcon 2020 is no more, but that doesn't mean that we won't have a Blizzcon in 2021. In fact, Saralyn's message to fans specifically mentions that “we will meet again,” so it's safe to assume the Blizzcon 2021 is a go if nothing really wrong happens … again.

We’ve had many discussions about what holding a convention could look like in light of all the health and safety considerations we’d want to make. We’ve also talked about different paths we could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the months ahead. Ultimately, after considering our options, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to not have BlizzCon this year. We’re feeling deeply disappointed about this decision, and imagine many of you will feel the same. I truly love BlizzCon, and I know that’s a sentiment shared by everyone at Blizzard. We will sorely miss connecting with so many of you at the convention and “recharging our geek batteries” this fall.”

All esports competitions hosted on Blizzcon's stages will probably happen online throughout the year, so from that point of view, there's no change. We have no idea what Activision-Blizzard had planned for this year's Blizzcon in terms of announcements, but if the company has anything important to reveal, it will happen online only.

As the company says, we'll learn more about Activision-Blizzard's plans “as they develop.” Meanwhile, World of Warcraft fans can jump into Shadowlands once the new expansion arrives this summer.
