Huawei and ZTE flagged as national security risks in the US

The Beijing government publicly requested the United States to stop bullying Chinese companies and use claims as national security risks to issue sanctions against them.

The comments were made on Monday by the foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, only a few days after both Huawei and ZTE were flagged as national security risks in the United States.

As per Reuters, the decision announced by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) thus banned the Chinese companies from obtaining up to $8.5 billion government funds to buy network equipment for their local operations.

The Huawei dispute

The United States government blacklisted Huawei back in May on claims that the Chinese company was used as a spying weapon for the Chinese government. According to the terms of the ban, Huawei was no longer allowed to work with American firms and use their products, including here both software and hardware.

As a result of the new sanctions, Huawei was blocked from installing Android and Windows on its devices, a change that eventually forced the Chinese tech giant to launch new products without Google apps and services.

The most recent such product is iPad Pro rival MatePad Pro, which runs the free version of Android but without any Google app. The device, however, is only aimed at the Chinese market, with no plans for an international launch for the time being, albeit this can change depending on how the US tension is resolved.

More recently, the United States government started issuing temporary licenses for American companies to work with Huawei, including for Microsoft. This means the Chinese firm can once again install Windows on its PCs, albeit no change has so far been made regarding the use of Android on new smartphones. Neither Google nor Huawei has so far commented on the possibility of obtaining a temporary license for Android.
