14 DAY TRIAL // Unbound: Worlds Apart is a beautiful platformer that combines puzzle solving and a captivating story, and it might become a reality via Kickstarter.
Side-scrolling games usually involve shooting stuff, with some other elements thrown in, but it doesn’t have to be like that. A few 2D games managed to break out of this mold and do something different. Unbound: Worlds Apart is definitely one of them.
The concept of puzzle solving and 2D platformer is not something new. One of the most popular games that exploited this idea to its full potential was Limbo, which became a classic. Unbound tries a similar approach, but it’s more complicated than just staying alive in the light.
Puzzles don’t usually matter without a story
People love to solve puzzles, sometimes just for the sake of it, but games are better when there is a story that propels the players forward. Sometimes, the game is much about the journey and not about the conclusion. We don’t play games to get to end, but to feel good until we get there.
The developers from Alien Pixel Studios explain that “In Unbound: Worlds Apart, players take on the role of Soli. Soli is the only one who can look evil in the eye and remain untainted - so the power of the portals has been given to him, and him alone.”
The gameplay revolves around this very concept, of creating portals to other dimensions of the same world that have different rules of physics. In this way, when Soli needs to move a large boulder, he can move into another dimension when this is possible. The same goes for speed or night vision.
Alien Pixel Studios has a Kickstarter page set up and ready to go, if you want to help them make their game a reality. The game is expected to arrive on Steam in May 2020, for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS, and it will also feature a demo for the undecided.
