Official stats show massive iOS 13 adoption

The fragmentation of the Android ecosystem is one of the drawbacks of Google’s mobile platform, and this is caused by the huge number of OEMs, each with plenty of devices running the OS.

Of course, this isn’t the case in the Apple world, where updates are released to all supported iPhones at the same time, which in the end leads to better adoption of the latest operating system versions.

And the most recent data shared by the Cupertino-based tech giant reveals that this is exactly what’s happening right now, as more than 9 in 10 iPhones released in the four years are already running iOS 13.

Apple rolled out iOS 13 in September 2019, and the company is now working on the next version of the operating system, with a preview of iOS 14 projected to be offered this month at the WWDC.

Fast iOS 13 adoption

More specifically, Apple says that no less than 92 percent of all iPhones that were launched in the last four years are running iOS 13, while 7 percent of them are currently on iOS 12, the previous version of the operating system. Just 2 percent are currently on older versions of iOS.

As far as all the iPhone range is concerned, Apple says a total of 81 percent of them are now on iOS 13, while 13 percent of them are powered by iOS 12. And only 6 percent of the devices are still running an older version of the operating system.

Compare this to the Android ecosystem and the fragmentation becomes even more obvious.

According to unofficial data (Google no longer shares Android adoption stats), Android 10, which is the most recent stable version of the operating system, was running on a little over 8 percent of mobile devices out there. Android 10 launched in the summer of 2019. Android Pie, the version that’s been around for nearly 2 years, currently has a share of over 31 percent in the Android world.
