Battery degradation issues reported by users

The most recent updates released by Microsoft to its very own Surface lineup of devices might be impacting battery life on a series of models.

User reports seem to indicate that several Surface models are impacted, including the Surface Laptop and older Surface Pro generations.

Most users claim the battery life of their devices has been reduced substantially after installing the August 2019 updates from Windows Update, with some even pointing to a battery drop of 20 to 30 percent in a matter of minutes.

The battery drop mostly happens after a shutdown, with several users waking up with their devices asking for a recharge in order to boot.

“I am having the same issue.  Was plugged in at the office @ 100%.  Drove home which was about 25 minutes and powered it up and was @ 75%.  Surface Laptop 2.  This started after the last firmware update,” one user posted in the linked Community thread.

No workaround

Despite trying out several workarounds, nobody managed to fix the problem, and for the time being, there’s no solution other than getting in touch with Microsoft support. It’s also not clear if removing the most recent updates help address the problem.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has remained completely tight-lipped on the bug, albeit several users did reach out to the company asking for help and even sent feedback using the Feedback Hub. Most likely, the software giant is investigating the problem already and a solution should land anytime soon.

For now, the impacted devices seem to be Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro 5, Surface Pro 6, and Surface Laptop 2, albeit I’m seeing isolated reports of other models being hit too. I’ve also reached out to Microsoft seeking more information about the progress of the investigation and will update this article when an answer is offered.
