New options coming to users in iOS 16.2 update

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both come with a feature users have been drooling over for many years: always-on display.

However, in typical Apple fashion, the feature comes to new-generation iPhones with more special capabilities, so users can also display the wallpaper in a dimmed-out state.

In many ways, such an Always-On Display feature doesn’t make much sense, especially because in total darkness, an iPhone 14 Pro feels just like the screen is turned on permanently.

Apple knows this very well, so the upcoming iOS 16.2 will resolve this. The company will provide users with options to disable the wallpaper and notifications, therefore making the Always-On Display feel just like an… Always-On Display.

The current version of AOD

Apple obviously praises the current implementation of AOD, explaining that the display operates at 1 Hz thanks to a new lower-power mode.

“Your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max display can operate with a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz with a new low-power mode, and uses improved technology that allows the display to dim the entire Lock Screen. The display dims when you lock your device or leave it idle. Always-On display also uses multiple coprocessors in the A16 Bionic to refresh the display using minimal power,” the company says.

The feature is activated by default on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

“To interact with your iPhone, raise it, tap the screen, or press the side button. If you use Raise to Wake, raising and looking at your iPhone wakes your iPhone as usual. You can also swipe up from the bottom of your display to wake iPhone and activate Face ID authentication,” Apple further explains in a tech support document.
