Hints of new activities coming to AW spotted in iOS 11 beta

Apple’s next-month event is likely to include not only the unveiling of the eagerly-anticipated iPhone 8, but also a brand-new Apple Watch, which will introduce a series of new features, including LTE support to become fully independent from the iPhone.

But a report that’s making the rounds today indicates that Apple is also preparing some changes on the software side of the Apple Watch, like support for new activities.

iHelp has discovered a series of new icons in the existing iOS 11 betas which are presumably being used by the companion Apple Watch and defining the activities that can be tracked by the device and the app. There are several new workouts being hinted at, including dancing, curling, baseball, American football, skiing, and several others.

Support for older models also planned?

At first glance, no new hardware would be required for adding support for these activities on the Apple Watch, and this means there’s a chance that even older models could get them, though with the release of a new-generation model next month, Cupertino could very well use the new feature as a catalyst to convince more users to upgrade.

Of course, this is all speculation for the time being, but more information would be provided by Apple itself in just a few weeks when the company takes the wraps off the new-generation Watch and the new watchOS 4.

The beta versions of the Watch operating system do not include support for the aforementioned activities, but there’s a chance Apple adds them in the final release or includes them at a later time when they are ready.

Apple’s September event will include a rich lineup of devices and software updates, including the anniversary iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, the new Apple Watch Series 3, a 4K Apple TV, and the final versions of iOS 11 and watchOS 4.
