14 DAY TRIAL // Now that the 2018 iPhone generation is available for buyers across the world, Apple can increase the focus on the 2019 lineup.
And according to top-rated Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, one priority for the 2019 iPhone series is making the Face ID facial recognition system faster and more accurate.
Kuo says in a note to investors that 2019 iPhones will ship with a substantially improved Face ID version that will rely on a new flood illuminator with increased power. This would technically lower the likelihood of Face ID failing to scan users’ faces by reducing the impact surrounding light may have on the scanning process.
Apple is working at full speed on making Face ID faster and more accurate, as it has become the only unlocking feature on the iPhone and is not available across the entire lineup.
With the 2018 generation, Apple officially abandoned Touch ID, as iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR all rely on facial recognition exclusively.
Three iPhones launching in 2019
The analyst said earlier this year that the 2019 iPhone generation would include three models just like the 2018 lineup. In other words, next year we should expect two OLED iPhones and one LCD configuration, all based on the existing designs and with substantial improvements in terms of facial recognition.
Kuo also says he expects a new iPad to see daylight in Q4 2019 or Q1 2020. The new tablet lineup should come with Apple’s 3D tech called Time of Fly (ToF) before Apple eventually brings it to the iPhone as well, possibly in 2020. However, this plan could change depending on how the project advances on the iPad.
As it happens every year, the 2019 iPhones should be announced in September next year, and expect many more leaks to surface in the coming months as we approach the release date.
