Upgraded M1 chip due in the fall of 2021

Apple launched Apple Silicon with much fanfare in November 2020, and now the first devices already up for grabs for customers out there.

Needless to say, the M1-powered chips are already pretty successful, and with Apple working hard to bring its custom ARM chip to more devices, it’s now just a matter of time until more products hit the shelves with Apple Silicon.

And research firm TrendForce says it expects Apple Silicon sales to grow substantially throughout 2021, especially because the Cupertino-based tech giant plans to bring its custom ARM chip to upgraded MacBook Pro computers.

“The Apple Silicon M1 processors, based on the ARM architecture and officially released in November 2020, reached a mere 0.8% market share for the year. Apple adopted the ARM architecture primarily to optimize MacBook performances. Along with the release of Apple Silicon M1, Apple has also completed the integration between its hardware, software, and SaaS platforms,” the firm said.

“The company is expected to release 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, both of which will be equipped with Apple’s in-house CPUs, after 2Q21, raising Apple’s notebook market share to about 7%. The 7% and 20% market shares from Apple and AMD, respectively, mean that Intel will be faced with increasing competitive pressure in the market and need to deliver an appropriate product strategy in response.”

Upgraded M1 chip this year

Indeed, Apple is believed to be already working on a new generation of Apple Silicon, though for the time being, the information in this regard is very limited. But the company is likely to share more information in the coming months, possibly at the WWDC, though some hardware announcements are expected in the spring too.

As for when the new-generation Apple Silicon is expected, the fall of 2021 could bring exciting news in this regard, most likely as an evolution of the first M1 chip that was announced last November.
