An iPhone exploded after updating to iOS 12.1

Rahel Mohamad's iPhone X was charging from the wall adapter via the original Apple Lightning cable after when it suddenly exploded.

Mohamad started the iOS 12.1 updating process, plugged the phone into the socket for charging and, as he told Gadget 360, "Dark grey smoke started coming from the phone. The update was completed and as soon as the phone turned on it started to smoke and caught fire.”

When contacted regarding the incident, the Apple Support Twitter account said that iPhones exploding is "definitely not expected behavior."

Furthermore, Apple also offered to look into it further via Twitter DMs and most probably start an investigation to see what was the reason behind the iPhone X exploding while charging.

Exploding iPhones are not anything new given that all iPhone and Apple has also published a support page detailing how users can keep their smartphones "within acceptable operating temperatures."

A quick Google search for "exploding iPhone" around 14,500,000 results which shows that this is not an isolated incident and, to be fair, Apple's smartphones are not the only ones known to explode without notice.

For example, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 model was abruptly discontinued just months after its official launch following an endless stream of reports about Note 7 devices bursting up in flames.

Some iPhone X units also have faulty touch displays

The most probable cause behind these smartphones that come with an extra "exploding" feature is the faulty battery packs they come with.

The fact that most smartphones these days also come with batteries that can only be replaced by going into a service shop makes the issue even worse seeing that users will most likely hesitate to change their phones' batteries thinking of the service operation's extra cost.

iPhone X's built-in explosive capabilities are not the only issue affecting the device since Apple recently started an "iPhone X Display Module Replacement Program for Touch Issues" repair program, which mentions the fact that "some iPhone X displays may experience touch issues due to a component that might fail on the display module."

Even though Apple never publicly acknowledged that some iPhone X might explode even when charging using official charging cables, the iPhone X being discontinued after the launch of the iPhone XS line might finally have an explanation.
