14 DAY TRIAL // Apple’s big bet is obviously the iPhone 14 lineup, but given the previous series continues to be available at a lower price, it’s not a surprise that many people end up buying an iPhone 13.
However, Apple says the standard 14 iPhone is a much better purchase than the iPhone 13 Pro, and it’s all for a very simple reason. Despite having the same hardware under the hood, the iPhone 14 offers longer battery life thanks to the way components are aligned internally, as Apple eventually managed to get extra space for a larger battery.
Then, it offers easier repairability and is lighter, not to mention that overall, it’s a cheaper device.
Richard Dinh, Apple senior director of iPhone design, says this kind of work has been taking place since the iPhone 5 era.
“Since iPhone 5, we’ve used a single enclosure design, what we call a bucket design, and then since iPhone 8 with the introduction of wireless charging, we added the back glass, which was permanently affixed to the aluminium housing. This meant that any repairs to these internal components needs to happen by removing the display first, and potentially any other pieces, to access the internals, especially the ones located towards the back glass,” he said.
One big change, however, is how the iPhone 14 can be repaired.
While iPhones have been typically pretty impossible to repair, mostly because they required the display to be removed completely, this is no longer the case with the iPhone 14.
“This central structural plane helps to dissipate more heat across the entire surface more consistently. This design also introduces our first four-sided stacked main logic board [which] really condenses all the iPhone 14 components in a smaller space and allows us to access the board from either side, for improved repairability,” Dinh continued.
Of course, it’s not unusual for Apple to praise its latest iPhones, but the iPhone 14 indeed comes with significant improvements, including the addition of the Dynamic Island on the Pro.
