Cupertino said to consider dropping Lightning

Apple dropping Lightning in favor of USB-C isn’t exactly a new thing, as the company has reportedly explored this plan several times in the past, but according to a new report, the switch could finally happen on the 2019 iPhone generation.

Citing supply chain sources, Macotakara writes that Apple wants the iPhone to embrace USB Type-C on all models, as the company has already made the first step in this direction by bringing this connector to the iPad Pro.

While it becomes more obvious that the iPhone would eventually switch to USB-C too, the bigger question is when this is going to happen, as the cited source says these plans haven’t been finalized yet.

A recent report indicated that Apple’s feature list for the 2019 iPhone series has already been completed, and it wasn’t mentioned whether USB Type-C was included or not. If it wasn’t, there’s a good chance this standard wouldn’t make it to this year’s models, and instead, get the go-ahead on the 2020 generation.

New iPod?

At the same time, Apple is also rumored to be working on a new iPod touch model that would feature modern upgrades, like a substantial storage increase. The last iPod release took place in 2015 when the 6th generation hit the shelves, but since then, Apple focused entirely on the iPhone, as the media player has more or less become redundant.

However, with Apple investing more in services, and this division becoming one of the company’s main cash cows, a new iPod could help boost revenues in areas like Apple Music and App Store.

As with every new Apple product that hasn’t yet been released, everything could change overnight, and the company hasn’t said a single thing about them. As a result, some skepticism is recommended when reading these rumors despite them seemingly aligning with Apple’s long-term product strategy.
