14 DAY TRIAL // Apple today released the tvOS 12 software update for supported Apple TV devices, a major release that includes a plethora of new features, new security improvements, as well as lots of bug fixes.
After releasing the iOS 12 software update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices, as well as watchOS 5 software update for Apple Watch devices, Apple today released the tvOS 12 software update after more than four months of hard work, which is available now for Apple TV 4th generation and Apple TV 4K devices.
Highlights of the tvOS 12 software update include support for Dolby Atmos audio, new breathtaking aerials shot from space by NASA astronauts, secure sharing of passwords from your iOS devices, simplified authentication process with zero sign-on support, and Siri support for the Find My iPhone feature.
"With tvOS 12, Apple TV 4K will be the only streaming player both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified, delivering the highest quality cinematic experience of stunning 4K HDR visuals and immersive sound that flows all around in three-dimensional space," wrote Apple in the press release.
"Apple TV simply detects the user’s broadband network and automatically signs them in to all the supported apps they receive through their subscription — no typing required. Zero sign-on begins with Charter later this year and will expand to other providers over time," adds Apple.
tvOS 12 also adds Apple TV Remote to the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad device to offer you easier ways to access the Apple TV controls, and allows users to control their Apple TV devices through home control systems like Crestron, Control4, and Savant using Siri's voice search and control capabilities.
What's new for developers and how to update to tvOS 12
For tvOS application developers, the tvOS 12 software update brings enhanced AV player integration and data binding support in TVMLKit, native TVML-style controls for UIKit, MDM Software Update command support, focus support for non-UIViews, as well as sandbox iTunes account support in Settings.
To update your Apple TV 4th generation or Apple TV 4K device to the tvOS 12 software update, all you have to do is go to Settings > System > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the new operating system. Your Apple TV device will automatically reboot during the installation process.
