Apple released the first major stability update to its tvOS 11 operating system for supported Apple TV devices, along with the iOS 11.1, macOS 10.13.1, and watchOS 4.1 software updates.

tvOS 11.1 (build 15J582) is now available for the 4th generation Apple TV devices, as well as the recently unveiled Apple TV 4K, a.k.a. the 5th generation Apple TV, improving the overall security by addressing the KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attack) vulnerability in the WPA2 Wi-Fi protocol, disclosed by Mathy Vanhoef.

It also patches up to thirteen security issues for the WebKit engine, addresses a memory corruption issue in the kernel, a denial of service issue in the CoreText component, as well as a path handling issue in StreamingZip. Unfortunately, no other significant changes have been implemented in the tvOS 11.1 software update.

Update your Apple TV right now

All Apple TV owners are urged to update their devices to the tvOS 11.1 update immediately after reading this, otherwise, their set-top boxes could become the target of hackers exploiting the well-known Wi-Fi vulnerability that puts virtually any smart device using the WPA2 standard at risk.

Apple unveiled the tvOS 11 software for 4th generation Apple TV devices earlier this year when it introduced features like notification support, the ability to switch between dark and light modes depending on your time zone, AirPods support, as well as new background modes.

tvOS 11 also features new home screen syncing options that let you simultaneously sync multiple Apple TV devices in your home. We always recommend to keep your devices up-to-date at all times, so make sure you update to the tvOS 11.1 release as soon as possible for the best Apple TV experience.

Meanwhile, Apple kicked off the development on the next major point release, tvOS 11.2, which should bring an extra layer of performance and stability improvements to 4th generation and 5th generation Apple TV devices. The first beta of tvOS 11.2 is now available for developers and it's coming soon for public testing, too.
