Apple has released a new beta build of iOS 14, the next software update coming to iPhones in the fall.

iOS 14 beta 6 is currently available for developers enrolled in the testing program, and it lands approximately one week after Apple shipped the fifth beta to these users.

Needless to say, devs can download this new build right away, with Apple also expected to release a public beta in the coming days.

What’s new in iOS 14

As I said before, iOS 14 is a massive release, and it comes with important improvements for everybody.

Probably the feature that uses will love the most is the addition of widgets on the home screen. This update makes the home screen overall feel more dynamic, especially because this feature has remained largely the same throughout all these years.

iOS 14 is also bringing with extra goodies for CarPlay users, as it includes support for wallpapers and new categories of apps. Apple will allow devs to create CarPlay apps aimed at electric vehicles, so for example, you’ll have dedicated tools to find the location of charging stations.

Currently in beta since the WWDC, iOS 14 is projected to go live in September or October – the release date is actually a mystery, as Apple typically unveils new iOS updates when it announces a new-generation iPhone. However, there’s a chance that the iPhone launch event would take place in October this year, so it remains to be seen if the launch date of iOS 14 is also pushed back for one month.

However, iOS 14 beta 6 pushes us closer to the production build, and I expect the GM build to be released in the first weeks of September. If everything goes according to the plan, we should be running the stable version of iOS 14 by this time next month.
