Apple has recently purchased New Zealand wireless charging company PowerbyProxi in an attempt to create what one executive has described as “a wireless future.”

While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, Apple’s Dan Riccio, senior vice president of hardware engineering, explained in a statement for Stuff that what the firm is aiming for is a future without cables, probably not limited to iPhones, but also targeting other products in its lineup.

“We want to bring truly effortless charging to more places and more customers around the world,” he was quoted as saying.

At this point, it’s not entirely clear how PowerbyProxi’s technologies will be integrated into Apple’s portfolio, but the firm is building high-watt charging systems, and this could be a sign that Cupertino is aiming not only for faster wireless charging, but also for similar systems for products like laptops.

Wireless charging on the new iPhones

Apple appears to be very excited about wireless charging, now that the firm has finally rolled it out on the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. Wireless charging has been available for a very long time on Android devices and even though it works similarly on the new iPhones, Apple still see it as an innovative feature that can truly make a difference in terms of usability and convenience.

The company, however, has been looking into more advanced wireless charging for at least a couple of years, according to patents discovered a few months ago.

Apple developed a wireless charging system that worked across the room, allowing users to recharge their devices from literally the other side of the room with no cables needed. Although it was believed that such a system would make it to the iPhone 8, the company launched the device with a more conventional system whose features are very similar to the ones on rival Android models.

Apple hasn’t talked too much about this new acquisition, but if the company’s ambitions come to a conclusion, expect substantial upgrades in terms of wireless charging to see daylight on the coming iPhone generations.
