The company apparently wants to reduce reliance on Samsung

While for many this may come as a shock, the displays that Apple currently uses on the iPhone are made by none other than long-time rival Samsung.

At the same time, part of the screens are supplied by China-based BOE, while LG builds OLED panels for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

On the other hand, it’s not a secret that Apple has been working around the clock on reducing the reliance on certain companies, and this is why it’s investing so big in the in-house development of certain components. The Apple Silicon is the living proof on this front, and now Apple is reportedly planning to take another step in the same direction.

BOE displays

While the Cupertino-based iPhone maker isn’t yet ready to manufacture its very own displays, the company is planning to reduce the number of screens ordered from rival Samsung.

This is why the iPhone 15 (which is theoretically scheduled to launch in 2023) will use more displays from BOE, according to a recent report.

Apple is therefore discussing with BOE several ways to expand its capacity, and the Chinese company looks set to invest in its production lines and therefore prepare LTPO displays that could eventually be used on the Pro versions of the iPhone 15.

Needless to say, very little is known officially at this point, but the transition to more BOE panels will undoubtedly be a big challenge for Apple too. This is because the company is already preparing several big display upgrades, as the iPhone 14 is expected to ditch the notch and go for a punch-hole screen.

BOE will therefore have to build screens based on the same approach, but the whole thing could become even more challenging, as people familiar with the matter say Apple is also planning the return of Touch ID, this time integrated into the glass.
