New data shared by IDC for the fourth quarter of the last year reveals that Apple was once again the world’s number one phone maker thanks to solid iPhone 13 performance.

More specifically, the Cupertino-based tech giant dominated Q4 2021 thanks to the iPhone 13 selling like hotcakes, though overall, the company still declined 2.9 percent in terms of year-over-year market share evolution.

Apple sold a total of 84.9 million iPhones during the quarter, enough to secure a 23.4 percent market share, but down from 87.5 million units in the same quarter a year before.

Samsung was the runner-up with 68.9 million phones sold across the world, and this means the South Koreans are holding a market share of 19 percent. For Samsung, this is a notable increase from 63.7 million units in Q4 2020, so its market share jumped 8.1 percent.

Samsung tops 2021 overall

Xiaomi is the third in the charts with 45 million sold phones and a 12.4 percent share, followed by OPPO and Vivo.

“Despite a slight year-over-year decline in shipments, Apple had an impressive holiday quarter, once again jumping above Samsung into the top spot. Its strength in supply chain was on display more than ever in 4Q21. iPhone 13 SKUs were an impressive portion of volumes in the holiday quarter driving strong growth in overall iPhone average selling prices. Samsung and Xiaomi followed with the second and third spots and it's worth noting these were the only vendors out of the top 5 that grew shipments year over year in 4Q21,” IDC says.

When it comes to total 2021 sales, Samsung topped the charts with 272 million units, followed by Apple with 235.7 million iPhones and Xiaomi with 191 million sold devices. Samsung therefore has a market share of 20.1 percent, while Apple is the runner-up with 17.4 percent.
