Despite all the eyes currently being on the iPhone X, the MacBook is also selling like hot cakes, and new statistics show that Apple managed to overtake ASUS and become the fourth largest laptop brand worldwide.

Data provided by TrendForce for the third quarter of this year puts HP on the leading spot with no less than 25.8 percent market share, up from 23.4 percent the previous quarter. Lenovo is second with 20.1 percent and no difference quarter-over-quarter, while Dell is third with 15.6 percent.

Apple comes fourth with a small increase from 10 percent to 10.4 percent, while ASUS is next due to a drop from 10 percent to 8.9 percent.

The research indicates that demand for Apple’s 12-inch laptops, but also for the MacBook Pro, also increased during the quarter and it’s most likely a result of the back-to-school season that helped the company beat the market in quarterly growth.

Demand for Apple laptops still strong

It’s been estimated that Apple sold a total of 4.43 million MacBooks during the quarter, out of a total of 42.6 million laptops shipped by all manufacturers.

“Apple continued the strong shipments of 12-inch products in the second quarter, and focused on the new models of MacBook Pro in the third quarter, recording the third quarter shipments of 4.43 million units and an increase of 11.3%. It exceeded ASUS to rank the fourth in this third quarter,” TrendForce says.

HP, on the other hand, which continues to be the undisputed leader in the laptop market, sold nearly 3 times more units, with shipments reaching 11 million devices and a quarterly increase of 17.6 percent. TrendForce estimates that HP will reach total sales of 40 million units by the end of the year, and this should help remain the number one company in the yearly rankings in notebook charts.

Apple itself is also expected to experience a growth in the fourth quarter thanks to the holiday shopping season, but it is unlikely to get any closer than that to third-party Dell.
