It’s not a secret that Apple’s products are pretty expensive gadgets, but every time a new one comes out, the Cupertino-based tech giant always seems to be involved in some sort of competition with itself to win the race of who has the priciest devices.

This is what could happen with the release of the highly-anticipated 16-inch MacBook Pro, which according to people familiar with the matter could see daylight in the fall.

A report from the Economic Daily News indicates that the base version of the new MacBook Pro could cost no less than $3,000. Note that this is the starting price for the cheapest 16-inch MacBook Pro, so the more you upgrade it with more technology and add more options like increased storage, the higher the price.

Apple is expected to position this 16-inch MacBook Pro between the iMac and iMac Pro, basically trying to offer the power that users normally get on the desktop to those who need increased portability.

13-inch MacBook upgrades on their way too

The 16-inch MacBook Pro will feature an LCD screen with a resolution of 3072 x 1920 pixels. Of course, it won’t feature a touchscreen a la Microsoft Surface Book, as Apple has already expressed its commitment to the classic laptop form factor.

The linked report also indicates that Apple plans to reveal updated MacBook Pro and Retina MacBook Air models. Both feature 13-inch screens, and it’s believed that under-the-hood upgrades could be made this year, including a new keyboard design that would help prevent issues discovered by customers in the past.

Needless to say, Apple has remained completely tight-lipped on its product plans, so take this report with a healthy dose of skepticism for now. If it’s accurate, expect the launch of the new MacBook to happen as part of an October event separate from the iPhone unveiling due in September.
