Even the iPhone SE is likely to get Face ID at some point

While some people believe that Apple plans to bring back Touch ID rather sooner than later on the iPhone, a new report this week indicates the Cupertino-based tech giant has absolutely no plans to give up on Face ID anytime soon.

In fact, not only that Apple will keep Face ID around for many years, but according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company actually wants to bring the facial recognition system to all iPhone models.

Furthermore, Face ID would also make its way to iPads, including even non-Pro models, and Macs, as Apple wants to go all-in on this security feature.

All in all, Apple wants Face ID to become a common feature across its entire device portfolio, not just on iPhones, but in the long term, even cheaper devices would get it.

Touch ID on the iPhone

Previous reports indicated Apple wants to bring back Touch ID on modern iPhones after the company gave up on this feature back in 2017 when it introduced the iPhone X.

New-generation iPhones only come with Face ID, but people with knowledge of the matter indicated that a fingerprint sensor embedded into the glass would make its way to the iPhone either in 2022 or 2023. Touch ID could therefore end up being offered alongside Face ID, though judging by today’s report, it’s pretty clear the facial recognition system would continue to be the main focus.

One of the reasons Apple is betting so big on Face ID is that the facial recognition system allows not only for security but also for augmented reality capabilities, though the company is also seeking ways to make this feature less intrusive and eventually integrate it into the glass similar to how the punch hole cameras are offered on Samsung phones.
