New data shared by research firm IDC reveals that the worldwide smartphone shipments declined no more, no less than 9.7 percent in the third quarter of this year as compared to the same quarter a year ago.

“The drop marks the largest-ever third quarter decline and the fifth consecutive quarter of decline for the smartphone market as shipments continue to struggle amidst weakened global demand and economic uncertainties,” IDC says.

Needless to say, the majority of phone makers have been impacted by the decline, including market leader Samsung.

On the other hand, Apple is the only company that managed to boost its sales versus the same quarter a year ago

More specifically, the Cupertino-based tech giant sold a total of 51.9 million iPhones during the quarter, up from 51.1 million units a year ago. The company’s market share has increased from 15.3 percent to 17.2 percent.

IDC, however, says the global rankings haven’t changed much as compared to 2021.

“Despite the challenging environment, vendor positioning did not change from last quarter. Samsung held the top spot with a 21.2% share, Apple came in second with a 17.2% share, while Xiaomi came in third with a 13.4% share. vivo and OPPO ended the quarter tied for the fourth position, each with 8.6% share. Except for Apple, all the top vendors suffered year-on-year declines. However, while Samsung and Xiaomi registered single-digit declines, vivo and OPPO continued to suffer high double-digit decreases,” it says.

Samsung sold a total of 64 million smartphones during the quarter, while Xiaomi, which finished Q3 on the third place, managed to ship 40.5 million smartphones. Vivo and Oppo were fourth and fifth, respectively, with 25.9 and 25.8 million devices. Oppo also recorded the biggest drop versus 2021 – down 22.3 percent year-over-year.
