Apple is betting big on Apple Silicon in the long term, and needless to say, improved versions of its custom ARM chips are projected to land rather sooner than later.

According to a report from Commercial Times, the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to release the M2 chip at some point in 2022. This new model is currently referred to as Staten and will be based on a 4nm platform, therefore delivering even higher efficiency and improved performance.

2023 is very likely to witness the debut of the M2 Pro and M2 Max. Codenamed Rhodes, the new chips will see the daylight in the first half of the year, and needless to say, the same 4nm fabrication process is going to be used as well.

At this point, Apple’s existing custom chips are built using a 5nm process, and the Cupertino-based iPhone maker says this allows for impressive performance achievements for devices using them.

“M1 is the first personal computer chip built using cutting-edge 5-nanometre process technology and is packed with an astounding 16 billion transistors, the most Apple has ever put into a chip,” Apple said.

“It features the world’s fastest CPU core in low-power silicon, the world’s best CPU performance per watt, the world’s fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer, and breakthrough machine learning performance with the Apple Neural Engine. As a result, M1 delivers up to 3.5x faster CPU performance, up to 6x faster GPU performance and up to 15x faster machine learning, all while enabling battery life up to 2x longer than previous-generation Macs. With its profound increase in performance and efficiency, M1 delivers the biggest leap ever for the Mac.

Needless to say, the information on the new chips is still in the rumor phase at this point, so a certain amount of skepticism is definitely recommended until a confirmation lands.
