Report claims 18W power adapter in the works

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X already come with fast charging, but the performance of this upgraded charging system is still well behind the one in the Android ecosystem.

Apple, however, plans to tackle this difference with the upcoming iPhone generation due in the fall, as the company is reportedly aiming to offer new USB-C power adapters with USB-C to Lightning cables for even faster fast charging.

According to a post on Weibo, Cupertino could include an 18W power adapter that would enable fast charging on the new iPhones with a USB-C to Lightning cable, also expected to ship in the box. This configuration could allow fast charging from 0 to 50% in approximately 30 minutes, MR estimates.

The 2017 iPhone generation ships by default with a 5W power adapter which obviously does not offer fast charge, so upgrading the device to 18W right in the box is clearly a welcome improvement.

2018 iPhone trio

Fast charging on the current iPhone models is possible with a USB-C power brick that costs at least $49 at Apple and which outputs 12W, while an extra Lightning to USB-C cable costs another $25.

The cited source speculates iPads could be the first to ship with the new power adapter, though by the looks of things, Apple might launch it with the new iPhone generation in the fall.

Apple’s 2018 iPhone trio includes a successor to the iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED display, as well as a Plus-sized version whose screen could measure 6.5 inches. A more affordable configuration is also believed to be in the works with an LCD panel, this time expanding to 6.1 inches, but lacking more advanced and pricey technology like 3D Touch and a dual-camera system.

The new iPhone models are expected to be unveiled in September, but a confirmation on whether a faster charging system would be offered is unlikely to surface until late summer.
