Apple analyst says the time has come for the Series 3

As it happens every year, Apple is expected to take the wraps off a new Apple Watch version this year along with a massive release of the operating system powering the company’s smartwatch.

A new watchOS version is therefore projected to go live in 2022, and obviously, it’d bring new capabilities and additional refinements to the current experience.

Because watchOS will therefore introduce new technology, Apple has no other choice than to kill off the old Apple Watch Series 3. The reason is as simple as it could be: this model no longer has what it takes to run watchOS, so the device will stick with the current version of the operating system.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has an excellent track on Apple scoops, says the Apple Watch Series 3 will therefore meet the end of life in the third quarter of the year when the new watchOS version goes live.

Apple Watch Series 3

Apple launch the Watch Series 3 back in September 2017, but the company decided to keep it around as a more affordable alternative to its latest-generation models.

The Apple Watch Series 3, however, was introduced with much fanfare by the Cupertino-based iPhone maker.

“The third-generation Apple Watch is an amazing health and fitness companion with intelligent coaching features, water resistance 50 meters1 and a new barometric altimeter that measures relative elevation. Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two models, one with GPS and cellular, and one with GPS, both featuring a 70 percent faster dual-core processor and new wireless chip,” the company said at that time.

The unveiling of the new Apple Watch models, as well as the new update for watchOS, will obviously take place in September as per the typical Apple product release calendar.
