As the company is launching new smartwatch models

The Apple Watch is projected to receive another welcome refresh later this year, and people familiar with the matter expect important upgrades both in terms of design and capabilities.

But on the other hand, it looks like the Cupertino-based tech giant also wants to make some changes in the existing Apple Watch lineup, as the company could finally kill off the Series 3 model.

Launched many years ago but still available for purchase as a cheaper alternative to the latest more premium Apple Watch models, the Series 3 is expected to be retired later this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

It’s not exactly clear if Apple wants a newer model to take the place of the Series 3 and therefore be offered as a cheaper alternative to the latest-generation watches, but given Apple is betting big on the Apple Watch SE, such an approach doesn’t make much sense anymore.

Apple Watch Series 3

The Series 3 was launched by Apple back in 2017, so it’s nearly five years old. The company launched it with much fanfare, praising its capabilities at that time.

“Whether users are out for a run, at the pool or just trying to be more active throughout their day, Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular allows them to stay connected, make calls, receive texts and more, even without iPhone nearby. The third-generation Apple Watch is an amazing health and fitness companion with intelligent coaching features, water resistance 50 meters1 and a new barometric altimeter that measures relative elevation. Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two models, one with GPS and cellular, and one with GPS, both featuring a 70 percent faster dual-core processor and new wireless chip,” Apple said at that point.

For the time being, the information we have here is still labeled as a rumor, so take everything with a pinch of salt for now.
