Apple has officially taken the wraps off a new iPhone model, though this time, it’s not necessarily a new device, but just a brand-new finish that’s available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini ranges.

It’s a purple version of the two models that goes on sale this month and which Apple says comes “just in time for spring.”

Needless to say, there’s no hardware difference between the purple iPhone and the other colors in the lineup, so it all comes down to the appearance and nothing more.

iPhone mini to be retired next year

“The incredible iPhone 12 is the most popular smartphone in the world, and the iPhone 12 family has an over 99 percent customer satisfaction rate. The new purple finish, just in time for spring, adds another bright and fun option to the lineup, and we think customers are going to love it,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“This gorgeous new color joins the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini family, which is available in five other stunning finishes, and features an advanced dual-camera system, Super Retina XDR display, improved durability, A14 Bionic — the fastest chip ever in a smartphone — great battery life, and the best 5G experience on any smartphone.”

At some level, Apple adding a new finish to the iPhone 12 mini lineup comes as a little surprise, especially because this model is reportedly failing to meet the company’s sales expectations.

Furthermore, it’s believed Apple is already planning the demise of the iPhone mini, though the 5.4-inch device is likely to stick around for at least one more generation before eventually being killed off for good. iPhone 13 mini will launch in September after which the device would be retired in the favor of a new bigger replacement.
