14 DAY TRIAL // Apple has reportedly canceled the second-generation iPhone SE, as the company wants to focus entirely on the 2018 trio that includes a 5.8-inch iPhone X successor, a 6.1-inch LCD model, and a Plus-sized 6.5-inch iPhone X.
The Cupertino-based tech giant was originally believed to be planning a new 4-inch model borrowing design cues from the iPhone X, like the notch and the edge-to-edge display.
The unveiling was expected in the spring of 2018, with some people with knowledge of the matter then claiming that Apple could announce the new model at WWDC in early June – a first for the company given that WWDC is a software conference.
With a WWDC announcement nowhere to be seen, it was then speculated that the iPhone SE 2 is held back for the fall of 2018 when Apple introduces the other iPhone models. As a result, the second-generation SE was expected alongside the trio mentioned above.
iPhone SE 2 no more
But according to a Forbes report citing case maker Olixar, the iPhone SE 2 is no longer a thing, as Apple has given up on the project in order to go all-in on the three more expensive and larger models planned for the fall of this year.
Also referred to by the cited source as iPhone X Mini, the second-generation iPhone SE was supposed to target a niche that still has surprisingly many fans. 4-inch smartphones are becoming less common these days given the bezel-less approach that manufacturers embrace, and which allows them to fit bigger screens in smaller bodies, but Apple was one of the companies that were believed to remain committed to this size.
Without an official confirmation, there’s still hope that the iPhone SE 2 could see daylight at some point in the future, but needless to say, time is running out for Apple to take the wraps off such a model. If there’s indeed a chance for the second-generation SE to ever see daylight, expect this to happen in September when the trio finally launches.
