Apple launched Apple Silicon more than a month ago, and the company today acknowledged that ultrawide and super-ultrawide external displays might not play nice with devices featuring its new chip.

The company has confirmed in a support document that it’s aware of the bug and is working on a fix.

“If the supported resolution isn’t available on an ultrawide or super-ultrawide external display connected to your Mac with Apple M1 chip. If you connect an ultrawide or super-ultrawide monitor to your Mac with Apple M1 chip, some resolutions supported by your display may not be available,” Apple says.

The Cupertino-based tech giant says a fix is already in the works, but for the time being, no ETA is available as to when it could be released to users. What we do know, however, is that it’ll be included in an upcoming macOS update, which means it’s likely to go live in January next year, so for now, you’d better not hold your breath for this patch.

“Apple is aware of this issue and resolution is planned for a future macOS update,” the company says.

Fix most likely coming in January

In the meantime, Apple says you should just stick with a support display resolution on the external screen that you connect to a device running on Apple Silicon.

“To see the additional resolutions for your external display, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Displays, then press and hold the Option key while you click Scaled,” the company says.

Apple Silicon is already available on the first devices, and by the looks of things, they are quite successful, with many admitting these computers do bring substantial improvements in terms of performance and battery life. Apple is said to be working on an upgraded version of the M1 chip already, with a potential launch to be announced next year.
