Anonymous tries a last ditch effort to convince the Saudi government to save Ali Mohammed al-Nimr's life

Anonymous, together with its Saudi branch, has vowed to take revenge on the Saudi government after judges have convicted Ali Mohammed al-Nimr to death because he participated in an attempt to form an Arab Spring-type movement in the country.

Mr. al-Nimr was only 16 years old when he was arrested in 2012, and after exhausting all his legal options in Saudi Arabia's law system, he has now been condemned to death by beheading and then public crucifixion of his body.

According to multiple human rights groups, al-Nimr trials have been a farce, and many claim that the government is making an example of him for rebelling against the regime.

The young al-Nimr can be executed at any moment, since the only thing standing between him and the executioner is King Salman, who needs to put his seal on the court's decision.

Anonymous launched 3 DDoS attacks against Saudi government portals

Now, Anonymous, the Internet's largest hacktivist group, has launched #OpNimr and has moved to take down three key sites of the Saudi Government: moi.gov.sa (Ministry of Interior), moh.gov.sa (Ministry of Health), and mep.gov.sa (Ministry of Economy and Planning). DDoS attacks have been used to take the websites down. Except for the last website, the other two are back online at the time of writing this article.

A fourth site has also been taken down, mh.alabama.gov (Alabama Department of Mental Health), announced in the same tweet as the first three, but we failed to see any connection with al-Nimr.

In a statement addressed to King Salman and the Saudi government, Anonymous had this to say: "An innocent young teenage boy has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia and we will not stand by and watch. 13 judges have already approved the death sentence of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, meaning only King Salman has to approve it. We cannot and will not allow this to happen.”

UPDATE: Now the moj.gov.sa (Ministry of Justice) site is down as well.
