Report claims Apple hasn’t given up on this idea

The upcoming iPhone generation is expected to bring only subtle improvements to the current models, but on the other hand, it looks like the Cupertino-based tech giant is still looking into a rather controversial upgrade that not even Apple’s leadership team is sure they should use: a portless iPhone.

A report from Bloomberg indicates Apple is still considering this model, though, for the time being, no decision has been made.

So in theory, the good news is that an iPhone with no ports isn’t coming, but on the other hand, the bad news is that an iPhone with no ports isn’t coming yet.

How an iPhone without ports would work

Basically, an iPhone without any ports would also remove the Lightning connector currently available on the smartphone, going for a more compact design that would kill off one of the most popular connectivity options.

How this would work is quite simple: for charging, Apple would insist on users to stick with wireless charging, while for data transfers, the company would recommend wireless methods.

At first glance, Apple launching a portless iPhone is something that makes sense, especially because the company has gradually paved the way for such a product. The iPhone 12, for example, comes without a charger in the box, with Apple claiming this decision is supposed to help protect the environment, while at the same time encouraging users to stick with older chargers or wireless charging.

Today’s report indicates a decision on the portless iPhone hasn’t been made, but Apple not giving up on the idea is seen as a sign that sooner or later, such a device would still get the go-ahead. We’ll find out more about this project as we approach the September 2021 launch date of the next iPhone.
