The cheapest model should rival Nvidia 2070

AMD continues with its move to 7nm and gamers should expect the new Navi GPU in Q3, 2019, the earliest.

If you’re an AMD user and fan, you already know that the company is moving to a 7nm architecture for it’s GPU and CPU lineup. In fact, the AMD Vega line got a 7nm upgrade, so it’s just a matter of time until the new kid on the block, the AMD Navi, will show up with the same architecture.

To be fair, AMD wanted to release Navi all the way back in 2018, but it got pushed to this year. Like any new technology, and especially going smaller, the 7nm manufacturing process is not going to be smooth. Nvidia had some similar issues a few years ago.

Sometime in Q3 2019

According to the latest AMD’s annual earnings call, the new launch date for AMD Navi is scheduled for Q3 2019, which is actually a window spanning from July to September. It might very well be during E3, in July, and the 7 July date has been floating around the Internet, but there is no confirmation.

Not much is known about the line of GPUs from AMD, with a few exceptions. They are going to support ray tracing, introduced by Nvidia last year, and they are going to ship with GDDR6 memory.

As for the price, there are only a few rumors. For example, WCCFTech is citing some sources which are saying that the low-end version, which should battle out with Nvidia 2070, could cost just $249.

For now, AMD Navi is shrouded in mystery. We don’t even know if the first GPU is going to be the high-end or the low-end version. What we do know is that the market needs powerful competitors to bring the prices down for everyone, but we’ll have to wait a few months for that to happen.
