The service will be retired late next year

If you’re using Amazon Drive to store your files in the cloud, though this is rather unlikely given the likely reduced userbase of the platform, here’s something you don’t want to hear.

Amazon is killing off the service, with the company to move the focus to Amazon Photos. In other words, if you’re only interested in storing images and videos in the cloud, you can just move to Amazon Photos. If you want a fully featured cloud-based storage service, you need to look elsewhere.

Amazon Drive is getting the ax on December 31, 2023, but the parent company is planning a gradual transition to this important moment.

Move the data or else

First, the mobile apps for iPhone and Android will be retired on October 31 this year. Then, on January 31, Amazon will no longer allow users to upload new files to the cloud.

“On October 31, 2022, the Amazon Drive app will be removed from the iOS and Android app stores. On January 31, 2023, Amazon will no longer support uploading files on the Amazon Drive website. You will still be able to view and download your files until December 31, 2023,” Amazon explains on the official FAQ page.

Needless to say, customers whose files are still stored in the cloud in Amazon Drive are recommended to move all the data before the December 31 deadline or have everything deleted once the date is reached.

“ Beginning December 31, 2023, files stored on Amazon Drive will no longer be available to customers. We understand that content saved on Amazon Drive is very important to our customers. We will communicate our plan to remove or delete files prior to December 31, 2023 and provide sufficient time for customers to save their files. Customers are encouraged to use Amazon Photos to access photo and video files and download all other files locally (or with another service) before December 31, 2023,” Amazon says.
