News on this front previously leaked to the web

Amazon has recently confirmed that it plans to cut no more, no less than 18,000 jobs, with CEO Andy Jassy rolling out an announcement after news on this front previously leaked to the web.

Jassy explains that most of the reductions will take place in the Amazon Stores and PXT organizations, and come in addition to the job cuts that were announced in November and aimed at Devices and Books businesses.

Back in 2022, Amazon also announced a voluntary reduction for employees in the People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) organization.

Amazon’s CEO explains in the public announcement that “one of our teammates” leaked the job cut information to the web, and this is the reason the company leader had to come up with further clarifications on what’s happening.

“We typically wait to communicate about these outcomes until we can speak with the people who are directly impacted. However, because one of our teammates leaked this information externally, we decided it was better to share this news earlier so you can hear the details directly from me. We intend on communicating with impacted employees (or where applicable in Europe, with employee representative bodies) starting on January 18,” the CEO said.

Jassy went on to explain that all the affected employees will receive packages that also include external job placement support.

“S-team and I are deeply aware that these role eliminations are difficult for people, and we don’t take these decisions lightly or underestimate how much they might affect the lives of those who are impacted. We are working to support those who are affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support,” the CEO explains.

All those who are impacted by the new job cut should be notified starting on January 18.
