ABC has latched on another successful property whose success it hopes to replicate on the small screen: the 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” which was a smashing box office hit for TriStar pictures.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that ABC and the film’s original producers will soon start working on a new show that will be a sequel series to the movie. They’re partial to the half-hour format, as of the time of writing.

In the film, Julia Roberts plays a food critic, Julianne, who discovers she’s in love with her best male friend (Dermot Mulroney) just as he breaks the news to her that he’s met a girl he fell so madly in love with that they’re planning a wedding already.

The girl is played by Cameron Diaz, while Rupert Everett plays the gay best friend and counselor of Julia’s character.

According to the report, the new series will pick up after the events in the film, after Julianne fails to stop the wedding and embraces the sad reality that she was never “the one.” It will center on Julianne’s life as she “navigates in New York City, with her best friend George as her guide.

No names for potential castmembers have been offered, or for that matter, an estimated release date, but fans are already having a field day online, speculating on who would be the best fit for the leads.
