BlackBerry-inspired phone could see daylight soon

BlackBerry was at one point the most exciting phone brand on the market, especially as the company was investing in a mix that nobody else could offer.

The QWERTY keyboards made BlackBerry phones absolutely fantastic, and while the move to Android was supposed to represent a new beginning for the company, it actually pushed it a step closer to the demise of the hardware business.

Everybody knows what happened in the meantime, so right now, the chances of seeing a BlackBerry phone getting the go-ahead are pretty slim.

However, a company called Unihertz is about to take the world by surprise with its very own BlackBerry-inspired smartphone.

A teaser that was posted on Twitter only a few days ago was supposed to provide us with a mysterious look at a QWERTY keyboard, all without actually letting us see the rest. Well, the Internet has managed to do its magic, and with the right Photoshop skills, the image was further edited to reveal the rest of the phone as well.

No release date just yet

And as it turns out, the new Unihertz phone is more or less a clone of the more famous BlackBerry KEY2, a smartphone that combined a QWERTY keyboard with touch, all powered by Android. Leaving aside its shortcomings, the KEY2 was a compelling smartphone, and while many believed this was the most productivity-focused device on the market, BlackBerry parent company TCL ended up rather undecided as to whether to invest in this model or not.

Unihertz, on the other hand, looks ready to make the QWERTY keyboard a first-class citizen of the mobile class, so it’ll be interesting to see what the company’s device comes with.

Hopefully, the latest version of Android, OLED, and a flagship Snapdragon chip will be part of the spec sheet, because otherwise, it’s hard to believe too many people would end up giving it a chance.
