Zynga may not be getting the attention it used to, but it's still doing great in terms of users. Its latest creation, Empires & Allies, its most complex game to date, is now the second most popular app on Facebook, overtaking Zynga's first big hit FarmVille. Still, it's far behind the current leader, also a Zynga creation, CityVille.

Empires & Allies was launched early this month and, predictably, it got off to a great start.

It quickly racked up new users, now reaching close to 40 million monthly users, 39.9 million to be exact. FarmVille has 38.8 million monthly active users.

Of course, being that the game is not yet one month old, the number is extrapolated from the daily active users number and the growth rate so far. Empires & Allies has close to seven million daily active users.

In this metric, it's still got some catching up to do, FarmVille, for example, still has close to 10 million daily active users. Considering how fast it's growing, Empires & Allies should be catching up soon enough.

Empires & Allies' growth is impressive, though predictable considering that most big games launched by Zynga have followed the same path. In fact, the previous big hit, CityVille has not only grown just as fast, it is now the one to beat.

CityVille is by far the most popular app on Facebook, it has 88.4 million monthly active users, more than twice as much as Empires & Allies which is at number two. It has a great lead when it comes to daily users as well, 17.3 million users play CityVille every day.

Overall, it seems that Zynga is consistently doing great and that all of its games manage to get tens of millions of users. These users, in return, mean a healthy and steady revenue stream, but it also means that Zynga will have a nice story to tell when it goes public. [via Venture Beat]
