When Zoe Saldana was first approached and offered the part of Uhura in the 2009 “Star Trek,” her initial reaction was to turn down the offer, she reveals in a new interview cited by Wenn.

She’d started working on James Cameron’s “Avatar” and the thought of doing another huge film right after it was so scary that she seriously considered turning down “Star Trek.”

Luckily (for her and fans alike) she had Trekkie family and friends who made her see she was about to make the biggest mistake of her life.

“But my mom is a Trekkie, and my team was like, ‘Zoe, are you stupid? Don't let fear immobilize you. This is an amazing opportunity to step into the shoes of an iconic character in an iconic series and it's in space and you're a sci-fi buff.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, who am I kidding? Absolutely. I'll totally do it’,” she says.

Not only did she do it as advised, but she came back for the sequel as well. Look for Saldana’s Uhura in theaters in May with “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
