It will make it better

id Software is one of the most respected video game studios currently active in the industry, specializing in first person shooters, owning IPs like Wolfenstein, Doom or Quake. The studio has been a long-time representative of the small independent company that created blockbuster titles but, as you may know, it was acquired last week by ZeniMax, the enterprise that also owns Bethesda, the studio behind Fallout 3.

On that day we heard id's John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead say that it was the best move for the studio and that it would allow it to expand and bring in more people in order to work on multiple projects at the same time.

Now, the two executives share some more thoughts on the matter, emphasizing that this move will not change what id does and how it does it: “Things aren't really going to be different in terms of what's going on at id,” Hollenshead said. “We're not going to change the kinds of games we make. It allows us to accelerate the growth of our internal studios, so we can focus on making all of our internal games as opposed to working with external partners where there has been a step down in quality… There will be more, better games from id. So if you're a fan of the company, then it is all upside and all things to look forward to.”

John Carmack then reveals that the two studios, id and Bethesda, will collaborate but we won't see any concrete projects for quite some time: “The teams are very much separate. There is a lot of mutual respect there. There's going to be a lot of communication and cross-pollination. I doubt there's going to be any technology shifts between the two companies, but there's certainly going to be cooperation. And I wouldn't be shocked to see some hints of different things crossing over in different ways. That's just the kind of stuff when you have lots of people who think everybody is working on cool stuff together.”

Overall, id Software made a great move, as news reports about it hiring new people for other projects have already appeared, meaning that it can thoroughly use the money from ZeniMax to fund the creative process for other interesting IPs.
