The device has been recently spotted in China

About two years ago few thought that most of the flagship smartphones will boast Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) displays.

In the meantime, this type of screens have become streamline and few handset makers afford themselves not putting a Quad HD display into their flagship devices.

Sony is one of those companies that don't have the technology required for such a jump from full HD (1080p) to Quad HD screen. The Japanese handset maker stated many times before that it wouldn't be able to put such a display into any of its smartphones for the moment.

Well, it looks that by the time Sony makes the transition to Quad HD displays, the first 4K screens for mobile devices will appear on the market.

According to a new report coming directly from China, ZTE Star 3 could be the first smartphone to boast a 4K (2160 x 3840 pixels) display.

The 5.5-inch screen would be manufactured by China's BOE and will support an amazing 806ppi (pixel per inch). But what about energy consumption, since we know very well that even Quad HD displays suck up the juice from our batteries like there's no tomorrow.

Low battery consumption, increased strength

The same rumors suggests that ZTE Star 3 will take advantage of a TFT Panel that features a special crystal structure, which is meant to reduce the power consumption.

At the same time, the said structure will also enhance the screen's strength, probably the way that Corning Gorilla Glass coating does for today's displays.

Given the fact that the information has yet to be confirmed by ZTE, we suggest our readers to take it with a grain of salt.

One thing is sure though and that's the fact that Sharp already announced it would make a 4K display back in April, but also stated that it wouldn't be ready for mass production until next year.

China's BOE might follow the same trend, which means the first smartphones with 4K displays might not be available on the market until 2016.

Still, this means that we're not too far away from the ZTE Star 3 if the rumors prove to be accurate. Stay tuned for more on this one.
