Artist puts off surfing to test the new 8 megapixel camera, drops jaw

There’s at least one place on the web where you can bet you’re going to find some awesome videos shot by pros and amateurs alike? That place is Vimeo. There’s also at least one device out there that you can bet will shoot many such videos. That device is the new iPhone 4S.

Film maker and photographer Benjamin Dowie got his very own iPhone 4S recently. Although he had surfing in mind the next morning, he eventually decided to stay dry and test out the 8 megapixel camera in the new phone.

His reaction after offloading the footage onto his computer - “Holy cow. Time to throw my 7D in the bin.”

He shares the short story with Vimeo fans, saying “Got an iPhone 4S yesterday and got up this morning to go for a surf. No surf, so thought I'd shoot some stuff to see what the new camera is like on the 4S.”

“Got home, looked at the footage, and couldn't believe it came out of a phone. Was so excited so thought I'd quickly cut a vid to share the goodness. It's actually amazing,” he writes.

Judging by the video (embedded below), I’d have to agree. Put aside the effects (some of which also come from the iPhone), the level of detail is simply stunning!

The trick isn’t just in the 8 megapixel sensor, the multiple lens, the larger aperture, and the backlighting, but also in the automatic stabilization, depth of field, reduced motion blur, all of which also come through software.

“The automatic stabilisation seems to work wonders, and gets rid of most the jello. Depth of field is flipping awesome. Colours are really good straight out the camera,” says Dowie.

The artist admits he “did give this footage a slight grade with the 3-way colour wheel in Final Cut.” No, it wasn’t Final Cut Pro X and no, he’s not actually throwing away his DSLR either.

Cool vid Benjamin! Keep up the good work.
