By far the best of its kind

World of Goo is a physics-based puzzle / construction game. The title has already made an appearance on Nintendo's Wii, and is now available to buy for Mac and PC. Giving the demo a spin, you will yourself come to realize soon that World of Goo is easily the best physics-based puzzle game available for Mac today.

Best of all, the demo version features a full chapter of the game, which has players advancing through multiple intricate stages. Every stage comes with a different goal. For instance, one stage has players creating a bridge of goo that is long enough, but also steady enough, to go past the rotary wheels of death and on top of a strip of land to safety. It's roughly a combination of Lemmings and the Cubes mobile game, but endlessly more fun than any of the two.

“The millions of Goo Balls that live in the amazing World of Goo don't know that they are the stars in a game, or that they are extremely delicious,” says 2D Boy, the company behind the amazing game.

To give you a better idea of how this game has touched those who've touched it, WiiWare World asserts that, “It's quite amazing that a development team consisting of basically three people has somehow managed to create such a unique and utterly charming gaming experience like the one found in World of Goo. What's also quite amazing is that you can purchase this outstanding title for a mere 1500 Wii Points.”

The review also notes that, “Other WiiWare developers out there need to take notice that World of Goo has raised the bar for what a WiiWare title should be, and it raised it fairly high. Not only is it easily the best WiiWare release to date, it's also proof that you don't need a large development team or millions of dollars to create an outstanding video game. In an era of where style is often emphasized over substance, it's refreshing to see a title like World of Goo that somehow manages to feature an abundance of both.”

Just a little note – 2D Boy is a core team of two guys, according to the 2D Boy website. They are Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler. Also noted on their site is that these guys carried out most of their development on the game in various free Wi-Fi coffee shops, which they call “offices.” The self-titled “unstoppable force on the front lines of the indie revolution,” 2D Boy, is offering World of Goo for 20 bucks. No higher than Mac OS X Mac 10.1 is required to run this Universal app. Come back with your impressions once you've rescued a few dozen goo balls.
