Crowd-funding can really be a wonderful thing

An artist by the name of Michiel van der Kley has come up with what may just become the most far-reaching 3D printing project of the month.

Called project EGG, his idea was that everyone in the world could contribute to the construction of a building if they owned a 3D printer and had the mood to chip in.

Essentially, everyone around the world can 3D print one or more of the “stones” that will ultimately be connected together into the shape you see in the attached photo, and the video below.

Even individuals who don't have a 3D printer can help, by “adopting” a stone. Essentially, it's a donation that makes a stone “yours.” You basically pay other people to contribute for you. A little extra payment will get your name engraved on the stone, something you'd be able to do yourself if you actually printed the thing.

Altogether, the EGG is, or will be, composed of 4,760 unique stones, each with 4 screw holes that allow them to connect to the adjacent ones.

Adopting a stone costs €8 / $10, but getting the name engraved means €15 / $19. If you can part with €50 / $62, you'll be mailed a copy of the stone with a closed bottom, meant to be used as a vase.
