Right now, one of the hottest topics in international news is that of the Yemen bomb plots, but this problem related to air transport and international security has also had some effects in the world of technology, since Morpho Detection, Inc. part of Morpho, Safran group’s security business, has announced that the United Kingdom Department for Transport (DfT) has approved the Itemiser DX trace detection system for use in U.K. transportation security applications. The Itemiser DX is Morpho Detection’s latest trace explosives detection solution designed for use in checked baggage, passenger and cargo screening, According to the manufacturer, the device delivers fast detection in a desktop package that is reliable, cost effective and easy to use. Moreover, it is touted as being the first trace system to simultaneously detect positive and negative ions using a single detector, thereby helping to reduce operational cost by reducing the threat of mechanical failure that is commonplace in two-detector systems. Morpho Detection’s latest desktop trace detector utilizes a new long-life positive ion dopant that detects a wide range of explosives, including homemade peroxide-based substances. In addition, the Itemiser DX can be scaled to customers’ particular needs, allowing users to create custom substance libraries. In February 2010, Morpho Detection announced it signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration for several hundred Itemiser DX explosives trace detection devices as part of a competitive contracting process. “U.K. approval of one of our latest security technology innovations is a significant milestone for Morpho Detection,” said Dennis Cooke, president and CEO, Morpho Detection, Inc. “Coupled with deployment of hundreds of Itemiser DXs by the U.S. TSA, today’s announcement shows the Itemiser DX is quickly becoming a global standard in trace detection.” Quite obviously, given the nature of these products, those interested in getting one will have to contact the manufacturer directly, no info on the topic of pricing being officially provided.
