Yahoo has just announced MyBlogLog users that the service will be shut down in May, exactly three months from now. It's no big surprise since the fact that MyBlogLog was going to be discontinued had been leaked late last year. Still, it's probably not great news for the ones that are still using the service.

"We will officially discontinue Yahoo! MyBlogLog effective May 24, 2011. Your agreement with Yahoo!, to the extent that it applies to the Yahoo! MyBlogLog, will terminate on May 24, 2011," Yahoo told existing users in an email.

"After May 24, 2011 your credit card will no longer be charged for premium services on MyBlogLog. We will refund you the unused portion of your subscription, if any," the email said.

"The refund will appear as a credit via the billing method we have on file for you. To make sure that your billing information is correct and up to date, visit https://billing.yahoo.com," it continued.

With the announcement, the closure is now official. If you're still using MyBlogLog perhaps it's time to start looking for a replacement.

MyBlogLog enabled users to track visitors to their blogs and perhaps establish a community around it. It's unclear how many blogs were using the service at this point.

Yahoo acquired the company behind the service, with the same name, in 2007 for $10 million but, as with many of its acquisitions, didn't do much with MyBlogLog after that.

Of course, the major selling point of the service is no longer relevant, there are better alternatives, Google Friend Connect, for example, is similar. Facebook and Twitter offer similar widgets as well and they have the big advantage of the much larger social graph.

MyBlogLog's closure comes as no surprise since Yahoo managed to leak an internal slide displaying some of the products that were going to be "sunset."
