The button should help users report mistaken deliveries due to username recycling

Yahoo is getting ready to roll out a new button for its email service, and it’s one they hoped to avoid at all costs.

The “Not My Email” button is supposed to give owners of newly claimed user names the ability to return messages that are not meant for them.

This summer, Yahoo set out to do something new – to recycle unused email addresses that had been dormant for over a year. There was a waiting period before users could get ahold of the emails they requested via a special form, during which Yahoo tried to make sure the addresses were no longer connected to any other accounts, either on Yahoo or other email services.

The company went as far as setting up partnerships with other companies to make sure everything went as planned.

Now, however, in order to provide yet another tool to prevent the new owners from getting the previous users’ emails, Yahoo is including a new button that’s going to be accessible through the Yahoo Mail inbox, allowing users to reject mail that isn’t theirs.

The new “Not My Email” button will appear under the Spam drop-down, where you can report emails, hacked accounts and phishing scams.

And while the company was hoping the transition would go without a hitch, that doesn’t seem to be the case. There have been reports over the past several weeks of people getting emails that did not concern them, including financial information and other personal details.

The issue was confirmed by a Yahoo employee, as TechCrunch reports, but they’re monitoring the system for claims about mistaken deliveries in order to quickly check what’s going on with those accounts.
