A month after its main competitor, Google, launched an updated version of its Google Earth satellite mapping service, Yahoo is doing the same and launches a new version of its own map service, which is available at http://maps.yahoo.com/beta.

The new system will allow users to receive traffic information and alternative routes to get from point A to point B. At the same time, updating the system will offer users the possibility to pin point merchant locations.

Yahoo is now offering some of Google's facilities, such as one being able to scroll down a map without having to refresh the page, but Yahoo Maps will also offer brand new features, like the simultaneously displayed routes or the merchant location system.

The competition from providers offering mapping services is getting more and more active, which is a result of being so successful and having a great number of users who want to have the whole world at their little finger.
