Shortly after announcing the global availability of News Digest, Yahoo is back with yet another pleasant surprise for users of its services, the new Mail app that has just been released on Google Play Store.

Long-time Yahoo Mail for Android users will have a shock after updating to the latest version, seeing all the changes the company has made. Fortunately, Yahoo has done a great job with the redesign of the mail client for Android devices, and then some.

New features have been added to make the user experience smoother and more streamlined, but above all else the UI looks gorgeous.

First of all, starting with this version of Yahoo Mail app, users will be able to access the developers range of services within the mail client, including news, sports, weather and photos.

All these features are now accessible with a single swipe or click. For once, Yahoo Mail looks like a solidly built application, intuitive and with a great usability.

“Beginning today, we’re bringing that new experience - with the same one-tap access to personalized, real-time news and information - to Android.

“Go ahead and check email, read the news, search, look up the forecast, catch up on sports, watch videos and browse Flickr, all in the same place, without the hassle of switching between apps,” said Andrew Molyneux, senior product manager, Yahoo Mail, in a blog post.

The application allows users to swipe left or right or tap on the new icons in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to move between various categories, including news stream, inbox and Today.

The latter offers Yahoo Mail users the latest info on local weather, sports, headlines, popular videos and photos, which is possible thanks to a new Flickr integration.

According to Yahoo, the News and Today experiences are not ready yet, but they will be rolled out in waves to all supported devices in the next couple of days.

You can now download Yahoo Mail for Android for free via Google Play Store. Keep in mind that the application should be fully compatible with most devices powered by Android 2.2 and up.

However, some features included in the latest version of Yahoo Mail may require Android 4.0 or higher devices.

On a side note, iPhone users have received the new Yahoo Mail application a few weeks ago, so this time the app is only releasing for Android users.
