A day after AOL announced the availability of a SDK (Software Development Kit) for the external developers, who will be able to create their own AIM-based custom clients, Yahoo has also announced today the launch of two API (application programming interface) libraries and two improved ones.

"Developers play an important role in helping to enhance Yahoo!'s vast network of services. These new APIs along with new tools available on the Developer Network will continue to foster an environment of creativity and innovation that ultimately benefits Yahoo!'s users," said Ash Patel, chief product officer, Yahoo! Inc.

The four APIs target the Photos, Shopping, Calendar and Web 2.0 services.

The new APIs will allow developers applications which use Yahoo Photos, a service with over 34 million users, and Yahoo Calendar, intended to enable them to write applications that make it easier for users to access their Yahoo! Calendar from other sites on the Web.

The Shopping API, launched initially in August, was improved using the feedback received from users with a new feature that helps consumers quickly narrow their product search.

The improved API for MyWeb 2.0 will be available in the coming months.

"We are committed to providing developers with an open, easy-to-use platform to build applications and use Yahoo! technology in innovative ways," said Jeffrey McManus, director of the Yahoo! Developer Network.

The APIs will be available here: http://developer.yahoo.net.
