You might not remember this, but in October 2005, Microsoft and Yahoo had promised to allow their IM users to communicate without having to install both apps.

For a while, there was no word about the project, but if we are to believe Microsoft, their team has been working hard to achieve a satisfying result.

One of the members of the Windows Live Messenger has posted an enthusiastic message on the WL Messenger's blog. Below, you can find the most important part:

"As it turns out, it's been a hard problem to solve, and the team has been working hard, I still don't know exactly when you're going to be able to start adding those Yahoo! Buddies to your WL Messenger, but it can't be much longer. Last week I got to check out a fully functional version of WL Messenger which could exchange IMs with a fully functional version of Yahoo!"

Unfortunately, the message doesn't say anything about the advanced features included in the two clients. Initially, the two giants said that users will be able to use both text and voice messaging but they won't be able to enjoy more advanced features, such as image sharing and complex animations.

Considering that there's nothing new in that regard, the interoperability between the two apps could remain limited to text and voice.
